and transforming livelihoods.

PLANTING PROJECTS

Where are your trees being planted?

BALI

We launched our green banana flour ideas, built our test kitchens, opened our famous bakery, grew our IP and built our banana centric business group all from our base in beautiful Bali.

Indonesia is one of (top 5) the largest banana producer counties in the world.

Indonesia is also the world’s largest producer of coconuts, which is an important landscape linkage in our deployment of regenerative agroforestry as climate smart shade grown agriculture.

SOUTH EAST ASIA

Made’s Tree teams travel extensively within the Indonesian archipelago from our home base in Bali, to identify the areas of high social need that will greatly benefit from our Integrated Landscape and Livelihoods Development approaches.

All planting projects are designed as regenerative agroforestry.

EAST NUSA TENGGERA (NTT)

NTT is the southernmost province of Indonesia, made up of more than 500 islands with the largest ones being Sumba and Flores Island, facing the Indian Ocean in the south and the Flores sea in the north.

It is one of the poorest provinces in Indonesia.

FLORES ISLAND

Portuguese traders came to Flores in the 16th century and called the island Cabo du Flores – “Cape of Flowers”.

Flores is the Portuguese word for ‘flowers’ referring to the extensive coral gardens that the island is famous for.

In collaboration with the Coconut Knowledge Center, Made’s Tree will transform a 1920’s plantation estate, an unproductive land area of degraded soils to regenerative agroforestry. In this project around 600,000 Made’s Trees will be planted and sustainably intercropped within existing and new coconut palms, as a showcase of climate smart shade grown agriculture.

Sumba Island

The first ships from Europe arrived in Sumba in 1522 and by 1866 the island was part of the Dutch East Indies. Historically, Sumba exported large quantities of precious sandalwood, and was known as Sandalwood Island. Sumba is now famous for its surf breaks, ikat textiles and due to its distinctive flora and fauna, Sumba has been categorised by the World Wildlife Fund as the ‘Sumba deciduous forests ecoregion’.

Three separate Made’s Tree project planting locations are now scoped and identified in Sumba Island, and are expected to achieve the planting of 800,000 trees.

 SUMBAWA ISLAND

Historical evidence indicates that people on Sumbawa island were known in the East Indies for their honey, horses, sappanwood which is used to make red dye and sandalwood which is used for incense and medications.

The Mades Tree project planting areas situated in Sumbawa Island are facing Tambora Mountain, are structured as inclusive community partnerships under our Integrated Landscapes and Livelihood’s development programme. Sumbawa Island has the potential to deploy around 1.5Million Made’s Tree’s.

EASTERN AFRICA

Matoke, or the East African Highland banana was introduced into Africa from South East Asia in the first to sixth centuries AD, and is a critical, staple food in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Brundi. These East African countries were identified as important and aligned opportunities for significant expansion of the Made’s Tree model beyond south east asia. The synergy between Made’s Banana Flour Company IP in green banana value addition and the traditional culture in these countries around the cultivation and harvesting of green banana for domestic consumption is significant.

Made’s Tree teams are active on-the-ground in East Africa, using the agroecology and ethnobotany approaches developed in south east asia in their discussions with farming communities, local government and village level leadership to develop large scale planting programmes, and will launch the Made’s Banana Flour Company and Made’s Tree regional operations in Kampala, Uganda in 2023.

It's not just you and us.
Your contribution will transform the world as we know it!

Made’s Tree and Climate Change

Farmers often participate in traditional regenerative practices without recognition or reward. In formalising the systems that increase productivity and facilitate access to climate finance, we create new incentives for supporting the critical transition towards sustainability and net zero.

Carbon is one aspect of our larger picture. Co-benefits of biodiversity and the social impact of landscapes and projects are equally important for sustainable impact.

Fresh Banana Carbon Footprint Breakdown

  • Transportation: 36%
  • Packaging: 9%
  • Farming: 29%

Made’s Tree enables  a new extractive banana model  whereby high volumes of fresh banana are converted at source to a concentrated, healthy, consumer friendly, low carbon wheat alternative.
